What Veterans Day Means to NWN Carousel’s Military Community
Andrea Morrison, Chief People Officer & Former Active-duty Army Officer & Massachusetts National Guard
NWN Carousel is committed to creating an inclusive work environment for all. This pledge extends to providing support for our veteran employees.
Recognizing the importance of honoring those who’ve served in the military, particularly on Veterans Day, we understand the challenges veterans may encounter when transitioning to civilian life, including finding suitable employment. To address this, NWN Carousel partners with Headlamp, a veteran transition accelerator that provides training and work opportunities.
Our collaboration with Headlamp is a natural fit, given NWN Carousel’s proud history of recruiting military veterans for both our workforce and executive positions. Veterans bring valuable skills like discipline, leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability to our team, which greatly benefits our customers. Their extensive training and experience in high-pressure situations often translate into a strong work ethic and the ability to excel in demanding roles.

As a Veteran I certainly appreciate the observed holiday and for my brothers and sisters who also served to protect our way of life and liberties, however when someone tells me ‘thank you for your service’ my answer is always ‘it was my honor.
How do your military skills translate to your workday?
The military is a great example of teamwork. When you get to boot camp, you are placed in units filled with people from all parts of the country, of every race, color, creed and religion. By the time you leave none of those differences matter and you are one cohesive and highly functional unit executing on objectives. The military taught me a great deal about teamwork, integrity, accountability and leadership which I try to incorporate in all aspects of my life today.

What does Veterans Day mean to you?
To me, Veterans Day is a chance to honor my fellow service members and their families for the contributions that they made to our country. It’s a time of remembrance for veterans who have served and have sacrificed their lives for our nation.
How do your military skills translate to your workday?
To get any mission accomplished you had to work with all different types of personalities. This aspect of the Army was extremely valuable to me because it really drove home the importance of “teamwork to make the dream work.” I have learned a lot from every person I have worked with in the military and have gained a plethora of unique experiences. The Army has definitely shaped me as a person and I am glad for the perspective and experience. I have been able to bring my learned lessons and apply them to the different situations that I encounter within my job.
